A treatment with Leo Dening begins with an in-depth diagnostic consultation, which takes into account the main complaint and many other factors. From this he can build up an intricate picture of the patient's condition and understand where any imbalances lie. The treatment itself will consist of one or more of the three main Chinese medicine therapies - herbal medicine, acupuncture and tui na massage. A course of treatment can typically take between one and six months.

The in-depth diagnosis involves the patient answering questions on the main complaint and accompanying symptoms, diet, habits, emotions, as well as the medical history of both themselves and their close family. As part of a physical examination, Leo Dening pays particular attention to the patient's tongue and pulse, as these convey much about the patient's state of health. Taken together this information allows him to understand the patient's underlying condition and the factors influencing the principal complaint. Using this understanding he determines the appropriate treatment.

The treatment will usually incorporate one or more of the main Chinese medicine therapies - herbal medicine, acupuncture, and tui na massage.

These three therapies may be combined with moxibustion (a therapy involving burning herbs close to the body), cupping (a therapy involving applying a vacuum jar to the body), nutritional and lifestyle advice, and where appropriate advice on simple exercises.

When tackling a particular ailment, a course of treatments will usually be required and this can vary in length according to the nature and severity of that ailment. While some patients may experience a profound change in their condition after just one or two treatments, a typical course will take between one and six months, with treatments either weekly or fortnightly. At the initial consultation Leo Dening should be able to give the patient an estimate of how long the course of treatment might last.
