During his five years of training at Middlesex University and Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, Leo Dening learnt from leaders in the field of Chinese medicine. Beijing University of Chinese Medicine is widely regarded as one of the finest schools of Chinese medicine. The Middlesex University Chinese medicine programme was the only course in the UK to be fully validated and accredited by an academic Chinese institution. It was also accredited by the British Acupuncture Council and approved by the RCHM.

His training led to a bachelor of science qualification and included extensive studies of western biomedicine. He takes a keen interest in modern developments in orthodox western medicine, as well as in Chinese medicine. He actively seeks to forge links between Chinese medicine practitioners and western biomedics through increased interdisciplinary communication and understanding. Where he believes western medicine may be appropriate, he advises patients to consult their GP.

In his final year of training he spent five months on clinical placements at two of the top Chinese medicine hospitals in Beijing. This gave him the opportunity to observe and learn from experts in their field and to see the results of using Chinese medicine alongside western medicine in a hospital environment.

While training, he also treated a wide variety of conditions at the Asante Academy of Chinese Medicine in London where his talent was widely recognised. Patients and doctors often praised his treatment technique and he was said to be the best of the student doctors in his year.

It was also at the Asante Academy of Chinese Medicine that he studied tui na massage after completing his degree. By studying this technique, he has ensured that he is able to offer a well-rounded Chinese medicine treatment.

Leo Dening also has experience of treating chronic pain at the NHS pain clinic at the Whittington hospital in London.

He learnt qi gong (also written as chi kung) from Master Lam Kam Chuan a pre-eminent master of qi gong and tai ji quan (tai chi chuan). He practises qi gong daily and believes that this routine helps him approach life in a calm frame of mind and increases his sensitivity to his patients' conditions.
