What is Chinese medicine?
Chinese medicine is a collection of ancient but continuously evolving healing techniques designed to treat an individual holistically. It aims both to redress underlying imbalances that cause ill health and to tackle particular symptoms. It can be used in all stages of life to deal with illness, whether severe or mild, and to prevent illness by improving health.
How can Chinese medicine help you?
Chinese medicine is commonly used to treat a wide range of conditions from infertility to sports injuries, from depression and anxiety to tinnitus, from chronic pain to weight loss, or simply for general well-being. For a more comprehensive list see Conditions Treated.
What is involved?
Acupuncture is probably the best known aspect of Chinese medicine in the western world and is one of the three main branches of Chinese medicine. Very fine needles, designed specifically for acupuncture, are inserted into particular points on the body (known as acupuncture points) to elicit a therapeutic response.
Another of the main branches is Chinese herbal medicine. While still relatively unknown in the west compared to acupuncture, in China it is almost certainly the most commonly used aspect of Chinese medicine.
The third main branch is tui na massage which has traditionally been used in Chinese medicine as a therapeutic and remedial massage technique. It is often used at the same time as an acupuncture treatment, but can also be a useful alternative to acupuncture for those who may not like the idea of acupuncture.
In addition to these three main therapies, Leo Dening also practises moxibustion (a therapy involving burning herbs close to the body, usually near acupuncture points) and cupping (a therapy involving applying a vacuum jar to the body). He can also advise on nutritional and lifestyle issues, as well as on simple exercises based on traditional Chinese principles.
